एक बार एक आदमी तथागत के पास आया और बोला 'भगवन ' आप तरह -तरह से निर्वाण प्रप्ति के उपाय बताते है सीधे -सीधे निर्वाण दे क्यों नही देते। तथागत ने कहा , " बिना मांगे किसी को कुछ देना ठीक नही है"
तू ऐसा कर गांव मे जा और पूछ की किसको क्या चाहिए। वह व्यक्ति गांव मे जा कर एक -एक लोगो से उनकी महत्वाकाँक्षा पूछी और लिखकर बुद्ध के पास वापस लौटा। भगवान बुद्ध ने कहा ,' चल बता किसको -किसको निर्वाण चाहिए। वह वयक्ति बोला ,' भगवन मैंने गांव के लोगो से उनकी महत्वाकाँक्षा पूछा , किसी को धन चाहिए ,किसी को सुन्दर स्त्री ,किसी बच्चे चाहिए ,किसी को घर लेकिन किसी ने भी निर्वाण की बात नही कही। भगवन बुद्ध ने कहा चल उन सब को तू छोड़ तू तो है जिसे निर्वाण चाहिए। वह वयक्ति सकुचाते हुए बोला ,'भगवन मैं अभी कैसे निर्वाण प्राप्त करू मुझे तो अभी अपने पुत्रो की शादी नही किया है।
